There are many preconceived ideas about Africa that can sometimes generate a wrong and unrealistic perception of what this great continent is. Which allows us to see more clearly how much we still need to know about Africa.
So today, together with Only One, we will dismantle some myths about Africa.
Africa is a «country»
Africa is a continent of 54 countries (55 if we include Western Sahara). Africa is often spoken of as if it were a country, but it has an area of 30,272,922 km² – Europe has 10,180,000km².
In Africa there is nothing but savanna and wild animals
Yes, it is true that the wild fauna, the savannah and the jungles are some of the great attractions of many regions of Africa. However, there are also huge cities, beautiful beaches, historical monuments and much more.
«Do you speak African?»
There is no language that is called that. More than 1,500 different languages are spoken in Africa.
Africa, it’s too dangerous
It is true that countries such as South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic are on the list of the most dangerous countries in the world. However, the latest Global Peace Index places Mauritius (ahead of Spain), Botswana, Madagascar or Zambia among the 40 most peaceful countries in the world.
Africans do not have access to modern technology
Did you know that people in Kenya are 4 times more likely to have a cell phone than access to a bathroom or latrine? In 2013, 80% of Africans already had access to a cell phone.
In fact, the technology market is growing incredibly fast in Africa, and many global technology giants are investing heavily on the continent.
Africa is only misfortunes and sorrows
Every 60 seconds something bad happens all over the world, not just in Africa. But a lot of good things happen too!
