The country of the almost extinct mountain gorilla

Weather

Rwanda has a temperate climate due to its high altitude, this small mountainous country rarely sees temperatures rising above 25 degrees.

With the country just two degrees south of the equator, Rwanda is a popular destination to visit year-round. In general, the best times to travel are in the dry season between June and September. During this time, there is hardly any rainfall, the days are comfortable and the nights are clear.

In the wet season, most days there are heavy rains and the strange alternative day experiences sunny weather. Gorilla trekking can be done all year round and hiking is an adventure in the rainy season. The driest months tend to be a popular time to track these magnificent animals.

Seasons to travel

Precipitation begins to decrease as the dry season begins, January brings moderate temperatures and seasonal rains increase again in February.

The long rainy season begins with April the rainiest month of the year and Mayo brings consistent rainfall throughout the day.

The long drought season has begun rains are decreasing and the days are clear. The climate is warmer and is the recommended time to visit Rwanda.

This is the beginning of the short rainy season, during the day the weather is warm and humid.

Rwanda Highlights

A third of Africa’s endangered mountain gorillas live in Rwanda, while other primate species such as the chimpanzee live in Nyungwe National Park, known to be one of the largest mountain forests in the world.

Southwest Rwanda

Intriguing diversity, the oldest mountain forest in Africa in Nyungwe National Park. Considered by scientists to be a place within Africa that hosted wildlife species during the ice age.

Nyungwe Forest has a decades-old history, the densely covered mountains offer a variety of habitats and adventures. Located in the southwest corner of Rwanda, the national park is home to 400 species of chimpanzees and one of the only canoded walks in East Africa. The walk is approximately 200 meters long and offers a great experience looking towards the surface of the forest or just next to these stunning trees.

There is a wide range of hiking trails and for the avid birdwatcher there are more than 280 species of birds that can be found. Endangered species include the Madagascar pond heron, grauer marsh warbler and red-collar babbling.
